The Fourth of July is without question one of my favorite holidays. It's the only time of year when it feels right to be soaked through with sweat.

I usually spent my Fourths in Texas, going to parking lot barbecues and murdering bottles of Shiner Bock.

On the east coast, the other side of my family was doing whatever they do in Massachusetts. It probably has to do with fish, which is fundamentally abhorrent to the Southern sensibility. When my wife said, "seafood=awesome" on our way back up from the Jersey shore, I knew what had to be done.

My wife boiled then chilled some fresh cocktail shrimp, and I steamed some top neck clams, corn, red potatoes and butter potatoes with a 50/50 water and beer (Yuengling Lager) boil.

Gimmeh!

Feeling deadly serious, we also steamed some king crab legs and baked crab cakes from the seafood counter at Wegman's. And I baked some salmon with crushed yellow onion, fresh dill and lemon slices in a parchment paper envelope.

Dinner was capped off with a bowl of Chocolate Haze and OG Kush medley, and back-to-back screenings of Suspiria and Black Dynamite with the wife and our friend Christine. You could do a lot worse for a Friday night than an excellent DIY dinner, friends, and a relaxing prelude to Independence Day.

I used to swim in this stuff when I was a kid in California and Texas. Found it at the Mexican bodega up the street here in Jersey City. It's murdering the cottonmouth this Chocolate Haze has vengefully visited on me.

My first attempt at writing for this blog resulted in a 5-page opus on the merits of Sapporo’s special ramen, Coney Island ale, and the finer points of roasting a joint in front of Manitoba’s on the lower east side. I’ll be back shortly (as soon as I figure out how to be less longwinded.)

So here's the deal.

I came to NYC six years ago, and noticed two things immediately: New Yorkers know how to fucking eat, and NYC has some of the best bars I’ve ever had the pleasure of limping home from (and I’ve tippled in dives from Los Angeles to Miami.) When I discovered the open secret of NYC’s marijunana delivery services I knew I had found a home after years as a young American nomad.

Now, after a few years of dedicated hedonism, I think that it’s time to start cataloguing the exploits of my ragged band of cohorts as we navigate the limitless miles of New York City's restaurants and bars, and strive to find the perfect combinations of food, drink and smoke. This blog isn’t for teetotalers, prohibition advocates, or religious fundamentalists—it’s for everyday assholes who grind out a living in the city 40 to 50 hours a week and enjoy relaxing at the end of it all with a joint smoked in the park, some noodle soup (or kimchee pancakes, artichoke pizza, soup dumplings, fried oyster po-boys, or barbacoa tacos) and a tall draught of artisanal beer.

Let the quest to find the best combination of eat, drink, and smoke in NYC commence.
